TypeInstead

Support, and a few fixes

Email support@typeinstead.com and a person will reply. Most things are one of the five below.

Tell us your macOS version, which app you were typing in, and what you expected instead. In TypeInstead, the … menu has Back Up, which is worth doing before you change anything.

Nothing expands

Check the switch at the top of the sidebar is on, then check the permission: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility, where TypeInstead should be listed and switched on. If you have just switched it on and expansion is still paused, quit TypeInstead and open it again — macOS only hands the permission to a fresh launch.

It works in some apps but not others

A few apps, particularly ones built on Electron, handle pasted content their own way. Links may arrive as plain text, and file attachments may not arrive at all. That is the app's behaviour rather than a setting, and TypeInstead falls back to plain text where it must. If an app behaves badly enough to get in your way, add it under Settings → Excluded Apps.

A snippet fired when I didn't want it

Press Backspace straight after it happens and your own words come back. If a trigger is firing in ordinary sentences, make it more specific — my phone rather than phone — or give it a leading character like ;ph.

A file snippet says the file is missing

File snippets remember where the file is, not a copy of it, so moving or renaming the file breaks the link. TypeInstead will offer to let you choose the file again.

Moving to a new Mac

Use Back Up on the old Mac and Restore on the new one. Snippets live in ~/Library/Application Support/TypeInstead/snippets.json, so you can also copy that file across yourself. Files that snippets point to need to exist on the new Mac in the same place.

Billing, invoices and refunds

TypeInstead is sold through Setapp, which handles payment and refunds. For anything about your account, an invoice or a refund, contact Setapp support. For anything about the app itself, write to us.

Privacy questions

Short answer: nothing leaves your Mac. The long answer is the Privacy Policy, and for anything it does not cover, privacy@typeinstead.com.
